It all started on July 4, 1961, when Herb and Marilyn Hays drove into Hopkinsville in a 1955 pink and gray Nash Rambler station wagon with their three children, Jack, Peg and Lee Ann. Hopkinsville has proved to be all they dreamed of - an ideal place to plant their roots, raise their children, make a reasonable living and to become involved in and contribute to their community. Herb was manager what was then Hudson Furniture and had formerly been Chewning Time Furniture. Herb and Marilyn bought Hudson Furniture in the late 60’s and Herb Hays Furniture was born. Since then, Herb Hays Furniture has operated as a family furniture business, serving the home furnishing needs and desires of Hopkinsville and Christian County, and all communities within 50 miles. Herb Hays Furniture operates two stores – Herb Hays Furniture and Hays Clearance Center (that went into business in 1988). Marilyn became full-time manager in the early 80’s to allow Herb to pursue political and civic projects. After Herb’s death in 1987, Marilyn continued to be the CEO and expand the business. Under her management, Herb Hays Furniture has grown from 2 full-time/2 part-time employees to 24 full-time and 2 part-time employees.
